Billund History
The establishment of this important city, known for its world-famous Lego production and theme park Legoland, dates back to ancient times. The city was first mentioned in 1291 and was described as a small town where the Grene Church community lived at that time. The fate of the city - renamed Billund in 1510 - changed in 1916 with the investments of Ole Kirk Cristiansen. Having bought the Billund Furniture Factory, Cristiansen started to produce toys with the wooden wastes of the factory and shifted all toy production here with the Lego company he established in 1934. Billund is now one of the cities most visited by families with children, where a large part of the economy of Billund. More than 2 million people see Billund Legoland every year, which includes an activity center and a water park.
